Brush Your Teeth Better With These Easy Tips

When we are children, we learn our oral health routine by being taught and watching our guardians. As we then grow up and become adults, we don’t often seek out ways to improve the habits that we have created throughout our lives. However, when it comes to your dental hygiene, there are always ways to take better care of your teeth in between your regular exams and cleanings. Store Your Toothbrush Properly

We know that toothbrush storage probably isn’t the first thing on your mind when you think about good brushing habits and your overall dental hygiene routine, but it is very important! Bacteria like to live in places that stay damp for a while, so when we store our toothbrushes in a puddle by the sink, or in a cup or other holder with the bristles pointing down, bacteria thrive. Because of this, storing your toothbrush so that the bristles can totally dry is your best option, usually in a toothbrush holder where your brush can stand upright.

Choose the Right Toothbrush

Choosing a toothbrush that you like is important. And, as long as the toothbrush you choose has the ADA (American Dental Association) seal of approval, you are probably good to go, whether it is a manual or electric toothbrush. However, you should always check the bristle firmness of your toothbrush choices. While firm bristles may seem like a good idea, they can actually be too abrasive, wearing down your enamel and hurting your gums, which can lead to sensitivity and even a higher risk of cavities due to exposing other layers of your teeth. In the same way, brushing too hard can be detrimental to your overall oral health. Soft bristles and a lighter hand are all you need for an effective teeth brushing session.

Know When to Replace Your Toothbrush

The American Dental Association says that a toothbrush should be replaced every three or four months, which is good advice for your dental hygiene. However, if your toothbrush has frayed, worn down, or broken bristles, it is already time to replace it. Worn out toothbrushes can’t clean your teeth as well as fresh toothbrushes because they lack the scrubbing power and the proper bristle angles to get all the plaque and food bits out of harder to reach places. So, always watch your toothbrush and make sure that you are switching it out every few months for maximum brushing power.
