Dental Crowns

A Variety of Custom Dental Crowns

The point of restorative dentistry is to address any issue with your tooth’s health and structural integrity so that it can once again perform its duties (i.e., biting and chewing). In some cases, that requires completely restoring a tooth’s visible structure with a custom-designed dental crown, which can be bonded completely over a tooth to fully restore and protect it. Because every tooth is different, a dental crown will be highly customized to closely mimic the tooth that it’s meant to restore.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a complete tooth restoration that covers, or caps, a compromised tooth. To restore your tooth, the crown must closely match its size, shape, and contour so that it doesn’t negatively impact your bite’s balance and function. To achieve that level of precision, we utilize advanced digital imaging technology to measure your tooth and design your dental crown. For optimal results, we can also craft your crown using highly lifelike porcelain, zirconia, metal, or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM).

Different Kinds of Dental Crowns

  • Porcelain and zirconia crowns – Porcelain and zirconia are highly lifelike dental materials that can closely mimic the appearance of your healthy tooth structure. They can be tinted to the exact color and shade of your teeth, and because the materials are layered, they can also mimic the way your tooth enamel reflects light.
  • PFM crowns – PFM crowns combine the highly esthetic appearance of porcelain with the highly durable and strong support of metal crowns. We often recommend PFM crowns for teeth that are positioned more toward the back of your dental ridges, but are still visible when you speak and smile.
  • Full metal crowns – For teeth that are exposed the most intense of your bite’s pressure, such as molars, we may recommend placing a full metal crown for its high durability. Metal crowns are less likely to become worn down or fractured under intense bite pressure, making them more viable for certain situations.
