The keys to preserving your teeth, giving yourself a beautiful smile, and preventing problems like gum disease all come down to the same basic principle: a consistent home care routine. If you’re being consistent about how and how often you care for your teeth at home, then you’re likely to prevent any major oral health concerns and keep your teeth looking great. Be Diligent About Brushing and Flossing

Being diligent about brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily will have you on the fast track to proper oral hygiene. The goal of brushing and flossing is to disrupt the formation of bacterial plaque and tartar. Bacteria will always be present in your mouth, but preventing buildup on any one surface is how you keep cavities away. Plus, consistent brushing has the added benefit of removing pigment from the surfaces of your teeth and reducing staining.

Modify Your Teeth-Brushing Technique and Tech

How are you brushing your teeth? Doing so properly is as important as being consistent. You need to actually be cleaning all of the surfaces of your teeth when you brush, otherwise bacteria will still build up. You should use short brush strokes that move away from your gum line. Don’t press too hard when brushing, and make sure you use a soft bristle head to prevent excess wear on your enamel. If you don’t already have an electric toothbrush, you should strongly consider getting one. An electric toothbrush can thoroughly clean your teeth and help you reach surfaces that are often difficult to clean — like back molars.

Use Mouthwash for Added Clean

If you’re worried about keeping your teeth and gums clean, then you may want to also consider adding mouthwash to your daily routine. Mouthwash is often used to give you that “fresh breath” smell and feeling, but it can also be sanitary. Using an effective mouthwash can kill off the bacteria on your teeth and gums, though it is in no way a substitute for brushing and flossing. You should thoroughly clean your teeth before using mouthwash to give yourself an added bit of sanitation.
