Most of the time, you’ll probably make it through your day like any other day, with a smile that feels “normal.” However, there may be the occasional break from the expected when a funny sensation takes hold! It might be while you’re eating something. It may be out of nowhere. It might even be something that’s been creeping up on you. To help you sort through this oral health dilemma (and decide if you need a dental visit), we offer a fun quiz.

Quiz Questions: True or False?

  1. True or False: If your smile feels very strange after eating spinach, this is not normal. You should schedule a dental visit with us immediately.
  2. True or False: If something feels different, whether it hurts or is just odd, there’s no reason to worry. Wait a few months to see if it goes away and then schedule a visit if it persists.
  3. True or False: If your mouth feels dry, sticky, or uncomfortable, you probably just need a sip of water. This is no cause for any type of concern or a visit.

Quiz Answers

  1. False. This is actually completely normal. Spinach is known for the velvety or chalky feeling it leaves on your teeth because of a crystalline-form acid it contains (called oxalic acid). The crystals gather on your smile, making it feel strange. It won’t cause harm (but if you don’t like it, go ahead and rinse then brush).
  2. False. Any abnormality that persists for longer than 48 hours (or any serious discomfort that occurs at all) is a good reason to schedule a dental visit with us immediately, so we can protect your oral health.
  3. False. This may be dry mouth, a serious issue that we can treat by offering management suggestions and determining the cause. However, if you ignore it, you may end up with decay and other bacteria-related problems.
