Comprehensive Services to Protect Your Smile
From routine cleanings to treatment for TMJ Disorder and sleep apnea, we want to enhance your dental health and quality of life. Although Dr. Carter is very skilled with advanced cosmetic and restorative care, his first goal is to provide general dentistry services that will protect your oral health for life. During all of our treatments, our focus is on your health and comfort. For this reason, we offer personalized treatment and effective sedation options.
Dr. Carter provides thorough preventative care for both adults and children. During routine exams, he can check for gum disease, decay, oral cancer and other conditions. Thanks to his advanced diagnostic and imaging tools, he can often detect and treat these conditions in the early stages, before they cause more severe problems for your oral and physical health.
Oral cancer is one of the most common forms of skin cancer. Fortunately, when the condition is diagnosed and treated in the early stages, patients typically have a very good outlook. Symptoms of oral cancer include lesions on the soft oral tissues and red or white patches on the gums. Other signs include bleeding, tenderness, and numbness. However, before these symptoms manifest themselves, Dr. Carter may be able to diagnose oral cancer using state-of-the-art VELscope® screening.
At your biannual appointments, we will also provide a thorough cleaning. Your hygienist will carefully remove all plaque and tartar from your smile. Even if you maintain good dental hygiene at home, bacteria can still accumulate on your teeth, eventually forming the sticky substance known as plaque. As it remains on your teeth, it will turn into hard tartar, which only a dental professional can remove. Our hygienists work gently to protect your soft tissues and make your cleaning comfortable and even relaxing.
While sound teeth are certainly important, healthy gum tissue is also an important component of your oral health. Gum disease occurs when bacteria form pockets below your gum line. When the condition goes untreated, you could experience tooth loss, a receding gum line, and even jawbone degeneration. At each appointment, Dr. Carter will examine your gum tissue to look for redness, bleeding, irritation, and other symptoms. If you do develop gum disease, he provides minimal discomfort scaling and planing using a precise surgical laser.
TMD, Bruxism, and Sleep Apnea
TMJ Disorder (TMD), bruxism, and sleep apnea are often interrelated conditions. TMD arises when your jaw joints become damaged or inflamed. This can cause mild to severe jaw pain, headaches, tinnitus, and many other symptoms. Bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding is one of the primary causes of TMD, although the condition can exist on its own. Bruxism is often stress-related. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occur when your tongue and soft palate droop during the night. They then block your airways and you wake up each time this happens. As a result, you may never feel as though you have gotten a full night’s rest.
Dr. Carter treats all three of these conditions in similar ways. When you seek treatment at our dentist office, he will create a custom mouth guard. This device, typically worn at night, will realign your jaw and keep it in the proper position as you sleep. If you suffer from TMD, the dentist might provide additional treatment, such as Botox injections.
