During the summer break, kids tend to stay up a little later and sleep in more, which can interrupt their usual routine and cause brushing and flossing to fall to the wayside. Likewise, they could snack a little more and will usually reach for a treat high in sugar or a soda when possible. These actions then increase the risk of cavities in the months to come. We want to help protect their smiles all summer long and into the new school year, and with a better at-home routine, kids can safeguard their teeth against decay.
During their break, make sure your kids brush for two minutes when they wake, and then do the same before going to bed. Each time, they should use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and they can use electric or manual, both are effective if used properly. We also recommend a toothpaste with fluoride to help prevent tooth decay, as fluoride can strengthen outer tooth enamel.
Kids also need to floss every evening to remove the trapped food and drink particles a toothbrush cannot reach. They should do this before they brush the second time, so brushing can clear away the particles that flossing dislodges. Try to limit their consumption of sugar too, offering healthier snack options and beverages. Cutting back on sugar and starch makes a huge difference in their smiles!
Summer is also the perfect time to schedule their next checkup and cleaning visit. An appointment now means their next one will likely happen during winter break, so no need to miss school and all behind. We will also be able to treat issues we find, placing fillings for kids of all ages, and possibly removing wisdom teeth for teens about to enter college. We then clean the teeth to help lower the risk of tooth decay and gingivitis.
