Teeth whitening with your dentist typically offers superior results to over-the-counter whitening products, because your dentist has access to stronger bleaching agents. During an in-office whitening session, your dentist will carefully apply a strong whitening solution to your teeth before stimulating the solution with a special light. This process, which takes just over an hour, can remove the staining deposits on the surfaces of your tooth enamel. Your dental team will take special care to protect your tooth enamel and surrounding oral tissues during the treatment.
If a mid-day session isn’t really feasible for your schedule, your dentist can also equip you with a take-home whitening kit. The principle of take-home whitening kits is the same as an in-office treatment: Use a bleaching agent to remove staining deposits. In the take-home version, you’ll receive a custom set of whitening trays that fit comfortably over your teeth. You’ll simply apply a small amount of the bleaching solution in the trays and wear them for an hour or two each evening. In around 10 days, you’re likely to see dramatic whitening results.
Some staining is especially stubborn, and some staining comes from within your tooth (known as “intrinsic” staining). In these cases, teeth whitening treatment may not fully remove the stains from your teeth. Porcelain dental veneers can be used to brighten your smile in cases like these. Porcelain veneers are fabricated to fit the surface of your tooth and improve its appearance. That can include the shape, size, and the brightness of your tooth. Ask your dentist about dental veneers as an option for your smile.
