Enjoy a Brighter, Sparkling Smile
Tarnished teeth can have a huge impact on your appearance, making you look several years older and spoiling your otherwise healthy smile. With teeth whitening, however, you can enjoy a dazzling, younger-looking smile after just one easy course of treatment. At Elm Creek Dental, we offer both in-office and at-home whitening, and Dr. Carter will advise you about the optimal treatment for your smile.
Where Do Dental Stains Come From?
Extrinsic dental stains are on the surface of your teeth, and they are typically caused by food, smoking, and other environmental factors. Dark colored molecules from food will penetrate your enamel and adhere to the structure of your teeth. Additionally, acidic foods will wear away your dental enamel, and the dark pigmented molecules can form a much stronger bond with the softer layer of dentin underneath.
Intrinsic dental stains, typically darker and more noticeable, are located below the surface of your teeth. Certain medications and metal fillings often cause this type of discoloration.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening uses peroxide-based gel to chemically break down dental stains. As oxygen molecules penetrate your dental enamel, they will separate the bonds that hold stains to your dental structure. Please note that whitening treatments typically cannot address intrinsic dental stains. If your smile is marred by this type of discoloration, you may want to consider an alternate treatment such as veneers or bonding.
In-Office and At-Home Whitening
Both office and home-based whitening can be extremely effective options, and the type you select depends primarily on your lifestyle, timeframe, and budget.
During in-office treatment, Dr. Carter will apply a powerful peroxide gel to your teeth. He will leave it on for about fifteen minutes before removing it and reapplying another layer. Typically, he will repeat this process three times, and after the full 45-minute regimen, your smile could be dramatically brighter. In-office treatment may be the optimal choice for you if:
- You want instant results
- You have sensitive teeth or gums
- You prefer dentist-supervised treatment
If you choose to whiten your teeth at home, Dr. Carter will provide you with a set of tailor-made whitening trays. After filling the trays with whitening gel, you will typically wear them for 30 to 45 minutes a day for about two weeks. The results are comparable to office whitening. At-home care may be the right option for you if:
- You want to treat your smile at your own convenience
- You are on a budget
- You are committed to whitening treatment, and you will continue to wear the trays as directed
